Save this date: March 19, doors open 6:30 pm so please join us at Montrose Hall, 5920 - 119 Avenue, for an action packed information evening.  7:15 to 8:15 are presentations, questions after, and wine and cheese before and after. FREE EVENT Open to the public and league members of course and be green and bring your own cup.

6 presenters giving 20 slides each in 10 minutes for a full hour of the highlights of their projects.   We are still finalizing the participant list – check online shortly for completed agenda but subject matter includes the following and it is going to be hard to pick just six!!

This includes staff that book the major facility groupings in and around our Multi-Purpose Recreation Centers (Arenas, Pools, Fieldhouses/Flexi-halls, Gymnasiums, and Sportsfields) together with the staff who manage the rentals/bookings in our Attractions (ex. Fort Edmonton, Muttart Conservatory, Valley Zoo)

New side yard and building separation rules proposed for multi-unit housing next to houses. 

On March 23rd, City Council will consider Bylaw 15359 which was drafted to address the complaints of residents in houses next to larger multi-unit housing.   Have the new regulations gone far enough? Is a 3 meter side yard of a 3 storey apartment large enough?   Is a 6 meter side yard of a 6 storey apartment large enough?

The Map of 40 km Speed Limits around the City has been released

The EFCL, the City of Edmonton, and the Community Leagues  involved will then meet to discuss the program implementation in Ottewell, Twin Brooks, King Edward Park, Beverly Heights, Woodcroft, and King Edward Park.  The City has released maps of the exact streets impacted and these streets will see reduced speed limits of 40 km/hr by the implementation date of May 1.  Lighten up on the gas pedal!

Master Composter/Recycler Program

Once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the Master Composter/Recycler Program.  Over a three week course schedule (Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about environmental stewardship in Edmonton including history of waste management in Edmonton, home composting, household hazardous waste, vermicomposting and residential recycling.  This course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips to various City facilities.

City Plans Residential Speed Limit Reduction Pilot Project

The speed limit of 50 km/hr will be lowered in three-to-five communities next year as the city looks for ways to address the speeding issue in residential areas.  Under a pilot program recommended by EFCL and approved October 6 by City Council's Transportation and Public Works Committee, the maximum speed in these neighborhoods will be lowered to at least 40 km/hr and perhaps as low as 30 km/hr.

EFCL has offered to partner with the City in organizing public input to numerous proposed zoning bylaw changes which will be taken to City Council in early 2010.
By January 2010 the City will be prepared to give “Information Sessions” on the Residential Infill Guidelines for Mature Neighbourhoods.    EFCL has requested these information sessions be combined with an opportunity for people to have input into interpreting the Guidelines and developing new regulations to be incorporated in the Zoning Bylaw.

EFCL Joins School Sector Planning Exercise

Heartland Transmission Project to Create New City Skyscape

This project could radically change what you see from your yard.  Epcor communicated with whom they considered key leagues effected by the Heartland transmission lines project to receive community feedback. The proposed Heartland Transmission Project (the Project) involves the construction of a high voltage transmission line, which will connect the Heartland region (northeast of Fort Saskatchewan) to existing transmission facilities either west of Edmonton or in southern Edmonton. Mediation Service Ready for League Business

The Mediation and Restorative Justice Centre (MRJC) has opened its doors to Edmonton’s 149 community leagues. The centre is offering mediation services - free of charge – to leagues that find themselves tangled in energy-draining disputes. The service is a key part of a memorandum of agreement struck between the centre and the EFCL last month.

The City of Edmonton and EFCL Assist Leagues with the Green Shack Program

Public Participation in Planning & Development Processes

In 2007, the Edmonton Federation of Community leagues in partnership with the Urban Development Institute (UDI), the Edmonton area Home Builders Association (CHBA) and the Edmonton Planning and Development Department reached agreement on better ways to inform and involve community leagues and the public whenever controversial land development proposals arise in their neighbourhoods.  The City’s Office of Public Involvement helped bring the parties together to create better ways for people and communities affected by such events to learn about them and to participate in discussions about them.  UDI and CHBA representatives recognized that they too have a stake in those processes and were instrumental in supporting earlier stakeholder involvement, greater transparency and better information sharing, all major principles of the new approach.

When processing applications for for rezoning, closures/sales of road allowances and amendments to neighbourhood plans, City Planners will follow the Public Involvement Plan for planning applications.

When making decisions on applications for development permits, City Development Officers will follow the Public Involvement Plan for development decisions
