The Edmonton Minor Soccer Association (EMSA) is proposing players be able to register for soccer without requiring a Community League membership.

This would be a very significant shift with far reaching consequences for Community Leagues and our relationship with EMSA and the five Edmonton Zones.

This motion is being discussed at the EMSA’s upcoming General Meeting on February 24, 2021.

What Community Leagues currently offer local Soccer Associations

  • Community Leagues provide countless volunteer hours to support soccer programs.
  • Leagues procure jerseys and equipment, and often these are stored on-site without cost to the local Zone.
  • From soccer directors, to coaches and referees, Community Leagues have long been a source of support to EMSA and community soccer.

Implications of Potential Changes

This proposed change will not only result in financial implications for Leagues, but will also impact how families engage or connect with Leagues—if at all.

Historically, when families engage with Leagues through sport and recreation, we know lifelong bonds are built, and neighbours come together to support and build community. We often have said folks might initially come for the sport, but stay for the friendships. For decades, that has been both a source of volunteers and a point of pride for the EFCL and Community Leagues.

We also know when people have a Community League membership they gain a voice within their community, and they have the opportunity to engage in their neighbourhood on a whole new level. They volunteer for events and fundraisers, and at times get involved in board leadership.

The Community League system in Edmonton is distinct in Canada, and provides engagement, connection and a level of community empowerment not seen in other major cities.

Next Steps

Should this membership requirement change, Leagues will most certainly re-evaluate their current relationship with soccer associations. Leagues will need to consider options that value the power of our League system, and how they can connect neighbours through sport and recreation.

We ask in your role with the League, you strongly consider the implications of this change and the effect it would have on your own League, as well as the 60 Leagues who currently support EMSA soccer programming.
