Every Community League rink holds a special place in the neighbourhood’s heart, but not every one can boast that it’s been cared for by a local legend.

For over 35 years, Henry Stainthorp revolutionized ice surfaces as the head ice maker for the Edmonton Oilers at Northlands Coliseum. For nearly five decades, he’s also helped oversee Spruce Avenue’s rink, which was renamed in his honour in 2023. Now, thanks to the generous support of the Oilers Community Foundation, Rona and local firm Stanley Construction, the rink has a fresh look and a renewed purpose, ready to support community recreation the whole year round.

Spruce Avenue held a party and ball hockey game with Oilers alumni on Community League Day to help celebrate Henry and the new rink. Find out more about Henry’s story and the rink renewal in the video above.

And from all of us at the EFCL, we want to extend our thanks to incredible volunteers like Henry, who help make Edmonton’s neighbourhoods such wonderful places to live, play and get together.
