Get on the bike lane to glory!
As another Bike Month comes to a close, we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who participated in the 9th edition of the Community League Bike Month Challenge! This was another incredible, city-wide affair: more than 1000 riders from 32 Leagues across the city collectively rode over 142,000km! That’s the equivalent of nearly four times around the Earth, 25 times across Canada and over 1800 times around the Anthony Henday.
This year saw the introduction of two new aspects to the Challenge. In addition to the usual prize for the League that rode the most, this year we introduced a category for the League who managed the most kilometers per rider. Plus, we added a whole new kind of challenge with the Bike Month Scavenger Hunt, encouraging people to visit 60 locations around the city, including beloved Community League amenities, local landmarks and a host of local businesses and organizations, who provided treats and other incentives to everyone who visited.
We want to give a huge thank you to our partners who participated, especially our major sponsor, United Sport & Cycle, who not only provided the space and treats for our wrap-up party, but gave away over $1000 worth of gift certificates to all our winners. Though the point of the Bike Month Challenge is to get people out riding across Edmonton together, we have to admit that it doesn’t hurt to have a few fabulous prizes to give away either.
On that note, congratulations to our winners (you can find the top three in each category listed below). Ritchie once again managed the most total kilometers, with their team putting down an impressive 19,085km in just one month. Avonmore took home the km/rider prize with a cramp-inducing 471.25km/rider. And a huge congratulations to Yellowbird’s Nolan Rettie for visiting the most spots in our Scavenger Hunt. Though many great treats and fun pics were shared, Nolan was the only person who managed to get to all 60 spots, putting down over 1000km in his quest to see Edmonton. Incredible stuff!
There’s already more in the works, including a promise from Ritchie to organize a winter version. But for now at least we hope that everyone had fun, has plans to join in next year, and keeps in mind what incredible things can happen when everyone pulls — or, in this case, pedals — together!

Distance Reporting
Each League needs one designated data collector and reporter for the challenge. Individual riders should not add their mileage. Instead, be in touch with your League (or better yet, make sure to join your League’s Strava club).
If you’re here to report on your League’s weekly distances, fill out the form on the right.
If you’re here to find out how to become your League’s designated data reporter, email Erin erin.olefeldt@efcl.org.
Remember: Strava zeroes distance weekly on Sunday evenings at midnight local time. You will need to have a look at your League club’s distance later on Sunday evening to capture your weekly total.
