If there was any question that Edmontonians know how to embrace winter, our birthday festivities at City Hall Plaza put those doubts on ice. On January 23, the EFCL celebrated a monumental milestone- our 105th birthday, with an unforgettable party at City Hall Plaza.

Under the winter sky, the City Hall Rink transformed into a vibrant hub of connection. As part of the 2026 “Ice Grooves” program, the event drew neighbours from every corner of the city to celebrate over a century of community building. Skaters of all ages glided across the fresh ice, energized by upbeat rhythms, courtesy of a live DJ.

Despite the January chill, the warmth of community spirit was palpable- aided, of course, by the roaring fire pits in the plaza. Attendees gathered around the flames to warm their hands and enjoy complimentary hot chocolate and birthday cake, creating cozy pockets of conversation amidst the activity. It was a perfect setting for neighbours to reconnect and for new friendships to be forged, embodying the mission the EFCL has championed for 105 years.

The night was not just about skating; it was a tribute to the people behind the movement. The event shone a spotlight on the estimated 7,000 volunteers who dedicate their time to making Edmonton’s community leagues thrive.

It was a night that honoured the past while celebrating the vibrant, present-day energy of Edmonton’s neighbourhoods. If the enthusiasm felt is any indication, the Community League movement in Edmonton is poised for another century of success. Happy 105th, EFCL, and here’s to many more nights of community, connection, and joy.
