Summary: How the Project Evolved
Construction is scheduled to be complete in the fall of 2020. Community League Plaza will be available for public use once construction is complete.
We Started
We started in 2011 with a vision to create something wonderful to honour this important milestone and the legacy of what our 2021 centennial anniversary represented.
We Decided
We decided that building a lasting, tangible, public amenity aligned with what community league volunteers have done so incredibly well for decades.
We Made a Choice
With the City of Edmonton, we jointly selected W. Hawrelak Park, one of Edmonton’s largest and most central park spaces as the most appropriate location to develop this new amenity.
Happily, we are being generously supported.
From the beginning, our member leagues approved a five-year funding commitment, each league contributing 2,000 for at total of $314,000.
The federal government also provided funding in the amount of $355,000.
City council unanimously approved a motion to fund $600,000 in the 2015-2017 Capital Budget and another $750,000 in 2019.
We received $500,000 from the Government of Alberta in 2015 and in 2019 we received a $1 million grant as well.
Most recently our partner Area Councils came together to sponsor an element of our project and made a significant donation to our Citizen’s Voice Display.
As well as our many individual such as Capital Power that have supported,Â
Our partners, Servus Credit Union, Foster Park Brokers, ReMax, and others have also generously supported this project.
Construction on the Community League Plaza began in the fall of 2019.
The Community League Plaza celebrates 100 years of cherished community memories. One hundred years of friendships made and recreational activities enjoyed. It celebrates who we are – a city of neighbours that believe in and create community.
The finalization of constructing this plaza is the beginning of celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the EFCL and our legacy of leagues working together to build community in our neighbourhoods.
We are in the final stages of our landscaping and displays.
Please join us October 3, 2020 for the historic moment when we officially open the Community League Plaza at William Hawrelak Park. This event will be virtually streamed on October 3rd at 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm. Please register here to join us!
With the Community League Plaza we hope to inspire our future community members to create another 100 years of fun, caring community experiences.
Fyi, the EFCL’s Community League Plaza isn’t a part of of the City of Edmonton’s William Hawrelak Park Rehabilitation Project, and construction of our Plaza will be finished long before construction begins on the Park Rehabilitation.
