LGBTQ+ Resources
Creating More LGBTQ+ Inclusive Programs: A Resource
In order to help address both gaps in knowledge that may exist for those running programs, and barriers that exist for those participating in programs, this resource was designed to help educate and instruct on how to make programs more inclusive for the LGBTQ+ community.
Pride Flags Guide and Information
While the Rainbow Flag has become ubiquitous with the LGBTQ community and Pride, there are a plethora of other flags that are not as common or may not be as well known. As part of an effort to change that in addition to educating on LGBTQ symbols, this document and matching game was developed.
Pronouns in EFCL Email Signatures
As part of an effort to demonstrate more inclusivity for the LGBTQ+ community through action, this project was created to implement a change in the email signature of EFCL employees.
Liaison to the LGBTQ+ Community Board Position Document
The “Liaison to the LGBTQ Community” position is important for a few reasons.

A Statement and Show of Support
As part of an effort to create a safe space for the LGBTQ community amongst the Community Leagues, a statement and a series of posters were created that could be displayed in community halls, denoting that the Community League and its hall are safe and respectful of the LGBTQ community.
- An explanation and the development of the project can be found here (A Show of Support document).
- The examples and variants can be found here (Examples and Variants document).
- All EFCL Example Versions can be found here.
For individual versions and to have a specific Community League named at the top of a poster, please email
leaguesupport@efcl.org.
LGBTQ+ Do’s and Dont’s
This resource document exists to help educate the reader about how to respectfully and inclusively engage with the LGBTQ people in their lives or in their community.
The resource is divided into four parts these would be:
Do’s – General
-
- This addresses how a person should treat someone who is LGBTQ with respect. It comments on ways general to the whole community as well as for specific identities such as transgender people
Dont’s – General
-
- This section touches on what should not be said or what actions should not be done with regard to treating LGBTQ people with respect.
Do’s – Coming Out
-
- In this section, the resource covers how to properly respond and support someone who has either come out to you or has recently come out to others.
Dont’s – Coming Out
-
- The final section addresses how someone should not act when someone has come out to you or others.
LGBTQ+ Mythbusting
There’s a great deal of misinformation that exists about the LGBTQ+ community and that is still spread to this day. Often times those who are spreading this wrong information are unaware that the “facts” they may know are actually myths. Thus in an effort to address these myths, the LGBTQ+ Mythbusting project was developed. The hope of this project is to help people learn the truth about the LGBTQ+ community and help prevent the spread of these myths to more people.
The project is made up of three different individual components. These would be an information document, a worksheet/answer key and an online quiz. The information sheet is exactly as advertised. It addresses some of the most pervasive myths that exist about the LGBTQ+ community and explains why they’re wrong. The worksheet can be used by a demographic and is an opportunity to work with a group in a more engaging way to educate on this topic. Finally, the quiz exists as an engaging opportunity for an individual, more hands-on form of education.

Supporting Inclusive Communities
One of the EFCL’s five strategic goals is to broaden the reach and diversity of Community Leagues. The participation of all strengthens the Community League movement.
We have created resources to support allyship and inclusion throughout the work Leagues and the EFCL does.
Supporting Inclusive Communities Online Course
Recognizing a gap in allyship and inclusion resources rooted in a community context, the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL) began this journey of working with Community partners and Edmonton’s Community Leagues to create a series of courses entitled Supporting Inclusive Communities.
These courses support those interested in community building, particularly Edmonton’s Community League Members, to consider all the ways they can be allies to the neighbours they serve.
To promote continuous learning beyond the course, the EFCL has created the following resource document that provides more support beyond the content presented in the modules. Feel free to use it and share it as you see fit.
Anti-Racism Project
In 2023-2024, EFCL is in partnership with Leagues and four BIPOC organizations organizing events as ways that create dialogue and learning in Community League spaces. Read more about this project or register for one of the events.
Community Inclusion Café
Come together for a virtual monthly meetup with League Members and neighbours to talk about how Community Leagues can become better allies to the variety of identities and communities that make our city vibrant. The following principles guide our discussions.
The 1.5-hour monthly gathering happens on the third Tuesday of each month.
EFCL Support
The EFCL has a dedicated League Outreach team composed of our community activators and inclusion advisor. If you’re facing an inclusion challenge or have a great idea to reach out to your underrepresented neighbours and need some support feel free to reach out to us at leaguesupport@efcl.org
We can also support Leagues by helping them understand barriers to participation for community members and supporting partnerships between Leagues and community organizations. You can read some of the work we have done below:
Featured Community Events and Opportunities
The EFCL will post events related to community inclusion hosted by other local organizations from time to time. Feel free to share these opportunities with your League Members.
Community Leagues 101
Community Leagues are unique to Edmonton and can be a great asset to the clients you support. Leagues provide opportunities for community connection, skill-building, recreational activities and more. If you are new to working with Community Leagues, we recommend attending our free Community Leagues 101 presentations. We go over Leagues, how to get involved, and why you should join a League. For details about upcoming sessions, email us at leaguesupport@efcl.org
We have also developed a version of this presentation for newcomer and English Language Learner populations. If your organization serves either group and would be interested in having the EFCL present to your clients/students, email us at leaguesupport@efcl.org. There is no cost for us to present.
Resources for Your Clients
We thank you for sharing information about Community Leagues with the clients you support. If you’re looking for a quick resource to share about Leagues, we’ve developed the following brochure that you can use.
EFCL Support
If you have an opportunity that’s accessible for five or more Leagues and would like the EFCL’s support sharing it to Community Leagues, please email leaguesupport@efcl.org. If the opportunity aligns with the EFCL’s goals and mandates, we will be in touch.
