The Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL) strongly condemns the attacks on Muslim women who call Alberta’s capital city home and the surging anti-Asian hate crimes.
Each and every one of these attacks stands in stark opposition to the spirit of Community Leagues—where Edmontonians of all backgrounds come alongside one another to build a better community together.
Since the beginning of EFCL, 100 years ago, our founding principles outlined the commitment to being:
“inclusive, regardless of class or ethnicity, open to both men and women, and did not have any affiliation with any political party or religious order.”
We resolutely believe racism and prejudice have no place in the movement.
Per Article 1 of the EFCL’s Code of Conduct, Community Leagues operate:
“without regard to race, creed, colour, religion, ethnic origin, sex, gender, or political affiliation.”
It is unacceptable for anyone within our communities to experience feelings of fear and danger. We recognize these very real feelings extend well beyond the Muslim community to other racialized residents, including People of Colour, Indigenous, Black and Asian Peoples living in Edmonton.
Events locally, nationally and internationally highlight how essential on-going education, social action and fostering connection is in combatting racism, intolerance, bigotry, misogyny, hate and discrimination.
Every individual deserves to feel safe in their neighbourhoods and be treated with dignity and respect.
The EFCL is committed to working with Community Leagues and Edmontonians to understand what more we can do to be better allies to our fellow residents experiencing injustice. As a starting point, we have co-created learning opportunities and a virtual monthly gathering space for League and Community Members to discuss diversity and inclusion topics. We will continue to work on our strategic priority of broadening the reach and diversity of all Community Leagues, and collaborate on the development of resources to bolster Leagues’ capacity.
We stand in solidarity with our neighbours who are suffering.
We welcome all those who are looking to make a positive change in their community and Edmonton. We encourage residents to join with us and help make a difference in the lives of your neighbours.
